George Steiner Annual Lecture 2023
The School of Languages, Linguistics and Film at Queen Mary University of London, is delighted to announce this year’s George Steiner Lecture:
Professor Martin Puchner (Harvard University Global Professorial Fellowship, QMUL), “The Interruptions of Culture“
Inspired by George Steiner’s Grammars of Creation, I will ponder the origins of culture and how it is passed from one generation to the next. Culture is transmitted through institutions of storage such as caves, collections, and libraries. But since these institutions are always prone to failure, cultural history is marked by different types of interruption and corresponding attempts at recovery. The result is a history of breaks and mistranslations, which in turn give rise to new forms of creation. What implications does this broad view of culture have for current debates such as the restitution of cultural objects or education?
Date: Friday, 03 March 2023
Time: 18.30
Venue: Queen Mary University of London, Graduate Centre, GC601 327 Mile End Rd London E1 4NS
